Mortgage brokers for refinancing

If you haven’t reviewed your home loan in a couple of years, there’s a good chance you’re paying more than you need to. A mortgage broker can compare your current loan against their lender panel and handle the switch for you.

When refinancing makes sense

Common reasons are a lower rate, finishing a fixed term, consolidating debts, releasing equity for renovations or an investment, or wanting features like an offset account. It can also make sense if your property has grown in value and your loan is now a smaller share of it.

Costs to weigh up

Look at discharge fees on your current loan, any break costs if you’re fixed, application and valuation fees with the new lender, and government registration fees. If you’ll borrow more than 80% of your property’s value, check whether lenders mortgage insurance applies again.

Cashback offers

A cashback can be useful, but compare the rate and fees over the life of the loan, not just the upfront cash. A broker can show you the comparison rate side by side.

Ask your current lender first

Sometimes a call to your lender gets a better rate without switching. A good broker will tell you if that’s the better move.
